The Long Way

Somewhere past El Paso a podcast ended and the playlist ran out, so I let the silence take over. Twenty-six feet of truck, everything I own strapped down behind me, and the only sound left was the tires reading the road out loud. You learn a country by driving it slowly with too much weight. The land stops being scenery and starts being work: every grade lives in your right foot, every crosswind in your wrists.

I have moved before. I had never moved like this, at a governed fifty-nine miles an hour with a mattress for a co-pilot. By the second day the cab felt like a small argument I was slowly winning.

This Week

The drive doubled as the longest user test I have ever run. Four days as the only user of Longways, my road trip app, and its worst one: tired, merging into fast traffic with a phone I could barely glance at. Data always has a point of view. Find out whose. Every set of numbers was gathered by someone, for a reason, with a question already in mind. Before you chart it, ask who counted it and what they were hoping to see.

July 4, 1976. Bruce Blackburn's American Bicentennial star hits every stamp, coin, and gas-station cup in the country. Built for total saturation, then, on purpose, for total disappearance. A national identity designed to burn bright for one year and go dark.

Castle on a Cloud, from Les Misérables. A small girl's song about the one room in her life that belongs to no one but her. The read for you: you are allowed a place with no chores in it. Just keep track of the door back. Reply and ask the Oracle your own.

Fade Out

The 400 Blows, 1959. Antoine runs until the land gives out at the edge of the sea, turns back toward the camera, and the frame freezes on his face. I drove the long way for the same reason he ran: to reach the edge of something and see what is there. The answer, mostly, is you, turned around, out of road.
