“John and I taught together at SCAD, and it was clear right away that he took the work seriously in a way that wasn't common. Not just his courses; the whole culture of the thing. He focused on what students actually needed to leave with, grounded in real professional practice.
What he brings into the classroom is what he brings anywhere: clarity, honesty, and experience. He's worked in agencies, run his own practice, and handled real clients with real stakes. Students aren't getting theory—they're learning from someone who's made tough calls and can speak candidly about them.
John genuinely engages his students. His passion is real and contagious, and he meets students where they are. He pays attention, gives direct feedback, and pushes each student to develop their work more clearly and confidently. I've seen him redirect a conversation that was going sideways without anyone feeling managed. That's a rare skill.
He's the kind of colleague you want around—opinionated enough to matter, self-aware enough to make it land. If you're thinking about working with him, just do it.”
“Working under John's creative direction at IBM was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. As a Design Principal, John brought an exceptional level of craft and intention to everything our team produced — and more importantly, he was deeply committed to elevating the skills of every designer on the team.
John led our team through the design of various HR systems for major companies, and his user-centered approach was evident at every stage of the process. He had a rare ability to hold both the big picture and the finer details in view simultaneously, ensuring our work was not only visually strong, but grounded in real user needs.
What set John apart as a leader was his investment in the team's growth. His design critiques were thoughtful, direct, and genuinely instructive. Through his feedback, I developed a sharper eye for product design, UI design, storytelling, and design thinking. He challenged me to ask better questions, advocate for the user more rigorously, and push my work further than I would have otherwise.
Any team would be fortunate to have John's expertise and mentorship. He is the kind of design leader who raises the bar for everyone around him, and the results speak for themselves.”
“John was my manager, and he was always rooting for me. From the moment I joined DigitalOcean as an intern, he advocated tirelessly for me. Rather than assigning me small maintenance work, he gave me something meaningful to contribute to, and used that work to make a case for bringing me back full-time on his team.
He taught me that great design is really about telling impactful stories, and his love for typography rubbed off on me in the best way. I think a lot more carefully about readability and type because of him. He encouraged me to think bolder, to be more confident in all aspects of design.
John brought energy to every room he walked into. When he led a meeting, you could feel it: people were more engaged, more excited to be there. Beyond all of it, John is just a genuinely warm, funny, and magnetic person to be around. I loved every conversation we had. Any team would be lucky to have him.”
“I've worked with John and The Collective for two decades. From the Texas Arts Project to Summer Stock Austin to ImpactArts, we've created educational brands that have transformed the lives of young performers across Central Texas. The Collective always starts from research and leads to unique experiences. Constantly surprised by their out-of-the-box points-of-view and insight-driven approaches that always lead to powerful outcomes. And everything looks amazing.”

“Professor Howrey was my light at the end of the tunnel here at SCAD. He is hands down the best professor I've ever had. Does he give a lot of work? Yeah. But none of it is simple busy work that leaves you feeling like you wasted your time. Howrey wants everybody to succeed but most importantly makes sure everybody is comfortable creating bad design.”
“Prof. Howrey was funny and I enjoyed talking to him. He gave extremely good feedback on our projects, which were intense but well worth it. Lots of presentations but I got a portfolio piece and learned a lot about graphic design. One of the most influential classes for me as the course was time-consuming and challenging but I gained confidence.”
“Professor Howrey is amazing. I had him during winter quarter for Type 1 and I took him again for this class. He gives great feedback to your work and really cares about his students. He does give a lot of homework, but it was worth it in my opinion. He is probably my favorite professor at SCAD.”
“This is the second class I've had with Howrey and he is a great guy. He is easy to talk to, he shows that he cares, and he makes sure that you have a solid grasp on GD before you leave. The only thing to note is he gives a lot of work: always expect process books and 100's of sketches (yet again, that's how you get good ideas).”
“i really enjoyed this class with prof. howrey. his projects are interesting and i think i have learned a lot from him about not only media management, but how the design industry functions. he is responsive outside of class and i can tell he really cares about his students. i will definitely be looking to take another class with him in the future.”
“The sketchbook assignments were pretty tough and a lot of busy work, but the actual projects you do are pretty fun and you learn a lot from them. He gives amazing feedback and wants to see you succeed. He's a pretty fun guy and easy to get along with as well. He will help you if you need it.”
“He is a great professor and gives great feedback. He does give a lot of homework but it helps a lot with our assignments. I would take him. He cares about his students and is very easy going.”
